There seem to prevail an illusion that one attains Liberation by merely attaining god-knowledge (Brahm Gyan). No doubt, attaining God-knowledge is an imperative pre-requisite for Liberation and therefore a great achievement. Yet, the blessees have to go a long way to evolve as spiritual beings to be liberated. Let us ponder over what Baba Avtar Singh Ji says in this regard:


Daroo poora Bajh Parhezon Asar Jiven Nahin Kar Sakda,

Amal Na Hathin Kariye Jekar Kam Nahin Koi Sar Sakda.

Dhood Nahin Mildi Sant Janan Di Jekar Man Satkar Nahin,

Gian Kadi Nahin Dil vich Tikda, Je Gur te Itbar Nahin.

Gur Bin Hunda Gian Kadi Nahin, Man Bin Gian Khalonda Nahin,

Avtar, Je Panj Pran na Maniyen, Shabd Bodh Vi Hunda Nahin.


Just as the best medicine cannot be effective without observing the precautions, Likewise no task can be accomplished without practical action.

The dust of the sacred feet of the saints cannot be attained if there is no respect in the mind,

Divine Knowledge can never stay in the heart unless one has faith in the True Master.


(Divine Knowledge can never be attained without the True Master and the mind cannot be controlled without God-knowledge,

Avtar Says, unless one abides by the Five Vows, Divine Word cannot be assimilated.)

In the above cited hymn, the crucial word is BODH, meaning to assimilate – a clear understanding. In other words, a clear understanding enables one to act rightly. The chief aim of God-knowledge is to transform a human from a physical to a spiritual being and for this a clear understanding of God-knowledge and its implications is essential.


Again, this hymn clearly states that to assimilate God-knowledge, one must fulfil the five Vows taken at the time of initiation. Let us consider the Five Vows and their implications :


  1. Not to regard one's assets – physical, mental and material – as one's own but a trust of God.

    Are we free from the worldly attachments? Do we perform our duty to our best and accept the result thereof-loss or gain, meeting or parting, joy or sorrow, praise or condemnation – as the will of God and remain equipoised and devoted to Him?

  2. Not to boast of one's caste colour or creed.

    Have we risen above such distinctions and treat all humans as humans?

  3. Not to have anyone on accounts of one's culture, including diet and dress.

    One eats, drinks and dresses as one likes, generally depending upon the climatic and geographical conditions. Should not others also have the freedom of choice in such matters? Of course, one should not indulge in anything which may bring disrepute or cause harm to oneself, one's family or others.

  4. Not to renounce the world and turn a fake saint but to lead a domestic self-reliant life.

    God has blessed each human with a body, intellect and strength. Should not one make the right use of the same to support himself, his family and serve others?

  5. Not to disclose God-knowledge without the permission of the Satguru.

    God-knowledge is a secret revealed by the Satguru to a devotee in good faith. Should it not be kept a secret?



To recapitulate, have we risen above every kind of pride and prejudice, distinction and discrimination, status consciousness and superiority complex, and regard all humans as members of the vast human family, each worthy of equal love and respect? Do we practice what we profess and preach? Do we uphold the principal. 'Do to others as you wish to be done by' and that everyone has a place and a role to play in God's creation? Do we live up to the Satguru's teachings, in letter and spirit, and regards ourselves as humblest of the humble?


It is said that discipleship is like walking on a razor's edge and therefore after attaining God-knowledge, one has to sacrifice one's 'I', 'Me', 'My' and 'Mine' to treat the spiritual path to evolve as a spiritual being to become eligible for Liberation. The Satguru's grace and guidance is always there and one can also draw inspiration from fellow devotees and the holy congregation. However, there is no proxy or barter Liberation. Each devotee, first of all the writer himself, needs to introspect where he/she stands and prayfully and earnestly strive for his/her Liberation.
